How to Improve Your E-Commerce Site’s SEO

It is said that doing SEO for an e-commerce website is a pain in the neck.

Competition in selling items online is hard and there are a lot of steps to take in order to build really effective e-commerce pages.

In this article, we will give the top five suggestions on how to develop and improve SEO on your e-commerce site.

1. On-page Site Optimization

Do not only focus all your SEO efforts on your home page because each of your pages counts in the rankings, traffic, and sales attributed to the on-page site optimization. E-commerce websites will work and bring your return on investment only if you are proactive in implementing at least the following:

  • Personalize the URL to fit your brand name or product name

Including your brand name as part of the title increases its weight in terms of resulting as a hit in the search engines. Also, try to incorporate the keywords that most people use online.

  • Include title and alternate text in images

Titles or captions and the ALT in the pictures inside your posts are significant as well in directing searches to land on your pages. For instance, a picture is showing the latest product you released. Instead of marking it only with “product name + brand,” you can add in more and write “product name + brand + color + some other specifications.”

  • Add internal links

Internal site links add value to your overall SEO. It’s sensible to create hyperlinks pointing to your related posts or even your home page URL. Make sure that there are no broken links and use a title of the link as well.

2. Content is King

SEO professionals now agree that Google is in constant upgrade of their algorithms, and we are not entirely sure what moves this search engine giant will make next. However, what we can expect is that content will stay valuable. To add value to e-commerce sites, you should promote not only what you have in your company but also contents related to your products and/or services.

Do exert efforts in writing a truly valuable page in your website. Strive to produce unique and original content that has at least 300-400 words.

3. Monitor and Analyze Site Performance

There are many software you can purchase and download. And there are sites which offer free services as well. You can take advantage of these such as the Google Analytics and SEMRush to monitor the site queries or keywords used to land at your e-commerce site, impressions or the number of times your site appeared as a result in search engines, number of clicks and click-through rate, and overall ranking of your website.

Now observe the trends weekly and monthly and know which of the strategies you use really work. Discover how you can improve on them and leverage on those which you can promote further.

Another useful tool is Google Webmaster Tools where you can derive the sources of traffic to your site. Here you can determine which of your pages receive significant amount of clicks from those which are neglected.

4. Enable Sharing

Digital marketing is not a one-way traffic endeavor. You must enable people to share your content in your e-commerce site. Through online contests marketed in social media, implement your SEO content strategy with creative user participation. As a tip, do not publish the winners of the contest on your blog or news page. A better way is to list their names in your product page to have readers directly read through product information when shared.

It’s advisable to embed ‘recommend’ and ‘share wish list’ buttons for your products to show up in other networks’ pages. Part of SEO is attracting people from different social sites, so popularize your contents by sharing them to relevant groups and forums and be active in word-of-mouth marketing.

5. Allow Product Reviews

Did you know that 70% of buyers online are looking for real testimonials or reviews of products before actually buying them? This is why it’s important to have product reviews made by your customers. Encourage them to post their comments on your selling pages.

This allows for a creation of awareness in the community and reflects both the good and bad. You can learn what improvements you ought to make to enhance your product. And at the same time, you can benefit from the “free advertising”.
