Looking For The Best eBay Alternatives? Read This.

by Sean Mal

in Listing, Selling

In recent years, eBay has grown obnoxious to sellers ridiculously.

Many sellers left eBay for good and never came back. Others reduced their presence tremendously.

Many of those being Top-rated Seller but couldn’t retain their TRS status.

Are you looking for eBay alternatives because you’re sick and tired of eBay?

Or maybe you want to expand and want another viable marketplace to list your items in.

Or maybe you’re just curious?

If your answer to any of these questions is “yes”, read on…

First off, let me tell you: there’s tens (or maybe hundreds?!) of online marketplace websites known as “eBay Alternative”.

I can’t possibly even name them all here; let alone reviewing them. So I’ll talk about some major ones below.

Amazon

Amazon is the biggest eBay rival. Many times in the past, eBay copied Amazon either in policies or how to present items to buyers (and I’m sure they will in the future).

Amazon generates huge traffic. I definitely recommend you list your items with Amazon.  However, there are some points to consider when selling with Amazon.

The major negative point (at least for me) is that sellers are not allowed to sell anything they want globally (only some items are allowed). Also, you have to list against current listings or pay a monthly fee. But Amazon generates tons and tons of traffic.

Cons:
  • Lacking the ability to sell internationally (except for DVDs, books, movies and some limited other items);
  • Having to pay a monthly fee to create your own listing;
  • Even if paying monthly fee, have to list against an original listing if the UPC or ISBN already exist
Pros:
  • Huge traffic to your listings;
  • Well known marketplace;
  • Fast payouts; Great tools at your disposal;

ebid

This website is a nice, seller friendly eBay alternative with pleasant interface.

The big advantage of ebid is that it’s FREE for both the seller and the buyer! However, I strongly suggest to get Seller+ so you get a lot of additional features for life for a one time payment.

eBid Free eBay Alternative

There are currently over 5 million listings on ebid.net. You can find everything from art to electronics and from household items to laptops on ebid. There’s a huge number of categories.

The support is fantastic and will resolve your problems very quick. ebid don’t let buyers rip off  sellers like eBay do! They put buyers in their place. For example, they remove unfair feedback when you prove to them it was unfair (and that’s an easy process).

Unlike Amazon, you can sell any item internationally to many countries.

They improve continuously. For example, they added the ability to cancel a transaction if payment is not received (before you had to contact customer support to get the FVF credit); and there will be a “Best Offer” function to Buy Now listings.
Update: The Best Offer functionality is live now!

I like everything about ebid except two thing: traffic is not that high (at least for me!) and the html editor can take only 40,000 characters. Other than that it’s fairly easy to list and you can have 5 separate stores and unlimited number of listings.

You don’t have to pay a cent if you don’t want to although I recommend getting the Seller+ account which will cost just $49.49 (one time payment). I did and I made the fee back through sales pretty quick. Anyway, signing up is free. They don’t misuse your information and don’t send spam.

Cons:
  • Traffic is somewhat low compared to eBay and Amazon;
  • The HTML editor can only take 40,000 characters so if you’re used to eBay listings with a lot of formatting, you’ll need to adjust;
  • Not 100% free if you want to take advantage of all features;
Pros:
  • Ability to sell internationally anything to a lot of countries;
  • Very low fees or even all free depending on what you use;
  • Great community willing to help you out either as seller or buyer;
  • Fantastic support team who will resolve almost any problem in their power very fast;
  • They back up sellers very good against dead bid or fraudulent buyers

Next, I’ll talk about other marketplaces like ecrater and bonanza. Stay tuned!

I’ve been very impressed with Amazon’s selling used items feature recently. I’ve often found textbooks I’ve needed for uni on there much cheaper than ebay and also with Amazon its mostly bookshops which I know I can trust!

Harriet,
Thanks for stopping by. Yes Amazon is great for both buyers and sellers. Only if they allowed global shipping for all items… *sigh*

Amazon is my absolute favorite place to look for new and used products of any kind. I was not aware that they didn’t ship all items globally, but they’re such a giant in the online marketing world that I’m sure it’s soon-to-come. There must be different types of seller accounts because I have one that has no costs associated with it (aside from Amazon taking a commission percentage). I use it to list old CDs and books I want to get rid of and that I hope I might make a buck or two on!

Brian,
Yes, there’s no charge to list items on Amazon but you’ll pay commission when it sells. Hopefully they add international shipping. If they do, my sales would go through the roof :)
Thanks for stopping by.

Well, I am addicted to Ebay and don’t think that amazon or any other online web store can cross EBay but i appreciate the writer effort to share alternate forums for the users interest.

Thanks for stopping by. There’s nothing wrong with being comfortable with ebay. However, there are sellers who don’t like ebay or want to expand or are curious about ebay alternatives. This post is for them and more on this topic will come. :)

Nice article. Amazon is the best alternative. Or just the best, no need to describe it as alternative. I prefer it because in ebay there are many cases where fake products are listed as original by some “weird” sellers and i really want to avoid that

Thanks for your input. Bad sellers are everywhere not only on ebay but when you pay with credit card, you’re protected against fakes no matter if it was bought on ebay, or ebid, or Amazon.

Personally I think Amazon offers far more options than Ebay. I suppose it also depends what you are selling and how you sell it.

Amazon is a good site for selling and item and I think Ebay is ideal too but your success in selling still depends upon your strategy.

The effectiveness of your selling will all depend on your strategy and the type of product you are selling. On the other hand, selling sites may also contribute to its result

Hi, Some people are moving away from ebay due to the high selling fees, I
know a few people who are doing well on Amzom and PlayTrade. PlayTrade is part

Just tried to open an account at ebid. NIGHTMARE. Only seller option is SELLER+ which I don’t want. Tried to contact ebid -won’t take my e-mail because I don’t have an account. Do you see the irony??? What gives? Not blaming you, just disappointed after reading your post. I was looking for an ebay alternative.

eBid’s customer service is really great. I haven’t had anything but great experience with their customer service. Believe me Seller+ is a lot better. You get the fee back in no time.
Thank you

New one.. Looks cool, tagntrade.com.au So unique, they let you take a photo and then you tag the items in the photo you want to sell, That would be perfect for retail thinking about it. photo a shelve and tag the items. It’s free to list, great idea.

With ebay making major changes in fees, charging more from the sellers and putting a restriction on the minimum resolutions required to upload the product’s photo.. I believe the best would be to look for an alternative which is best in the competition and which allows you to keep all your earning to yourself and not share it. Where sellers can:
1. Create Free listings
2. No Transaction Fees
3. Auto sync with ebay..carry all your listings from ebay along with the ratings and feedbacks in just a click.
4. Free integration with Google products (which auto populates the product description form for you, saving your precious time) and Google Shopping (which tells anyone who search on google to buy a product that it is available on our website, which by the way we pay for and provide you the service absolutely free)
5. Payment option like Paypal and Amazon for the most secure transactions
6. which does not allow you to leave a feedback for a cancelled transaction
7. a platform that not only list your products but also organise your customers and market your product in your network
8. a platform where you are just not dependent on ratings but also can leverage your social and professional profiles using log in through facebook, linkedin or google accounts
9. A platform that allows you to know the counterparty and build trust on the basis of work profile, school, college and other such dimensions.
10.Unlike ebay it has just one website (not different website for every country) so you can sell products worldwide and buy awesome products from across the globe as well
11. Unlike Ebay you can upload any resolution image and do not need only high resolution images to upload
12. Last but not the least it is absolutely free

And so the website that gives you all this is http://www.truegether.com

We have released our beta version and the new website with all these points said above will be launched soon in June, 2013.

We request all the sellers to list their product and leave us a feedback to help us improve more and give you a splendid experience of selling online.
